2018 Bookish Stats

I think this may be the first year I’ve ever done a bookish stats for the year. I’ve always seen people do it, but historically I’ve been terrible at keeping track of my reading aside from Goodreads. Well, my lovely readers, 2018 was the FIRST year I consistently kept a book journal tracking all of my reads, including rereads. (Note: I do not track rereads on Goodreads.) So let’s get into the numbers!

Total # of Books Read: 61
New Reads: 52
Rereads: 9

First and foremost, I read a total of 61 books in 2018. It’s the most books I’ve read compared to the past couple of years. My Goodreads goal was to read 50 books, which I also was able to reach! Let’s break the numbers down a bit further.

Target Audience

Middle Grade: 16%, Young Adult: 49%, Adult: 35%

This year I read mostly young adult, which isn’t very shocking. I tend to read mostly adult and young adult novels. What I am proud of is the ten middle-grade books I read. Middle grade isn’t an age group I typically strive to read, but with friends starting families and my youngest cousin turning 8, I think it’ll be good to have a couple of recommendations up my sleeve. So if you have any middle-grade recommendations for me, feel free to share them!

Source

Owned: 23%, Borrowed: 62%, Publisher/Author: 15%

IT WAS THE YEAR OF THE LIBRARY! I’ve been striving so hard to use my library more since I’ve moved back home, and I’m so proud to see that 62% of the books I’ve read this year were borrowed. The biggest thing for me was using my library’s Overdrive. I absolutely love that I don’t have to worry about overdue books using Overdrive. I did, however, have to accept the fact that I won’t be reading the hottest releases when they’re released. It takes FOREVER for the library to get new books, and when there is a new book, the waitlist seems like it’s MILES (or kilometers) long. It’s really quite tragic. Sometimes it makes me feel like I’m not truly a book blogger because I’m not reading the new releases, which really doesn’t matter.

Format

ebook: 75%, eARC: 10%, ARC: 3%, Physical Copy: 7%, Audiobook: 5%

Suprise, surprise! (This is me trying to be sarcastic. Did it work?) I read mostly ebooks. I want to read more physical books, but since I borrow mostly ebooks from the library, it doesn’t generally work out that way. Plus, I don’t really have a great place to read books besides in my bed. I much prefer reading an ebook when lounging in bed. When I finally have my comfy reading chair in my little reading nook in my dream home, I hope to read more physical copies. Plus physical copies are so much easier to photograph for bookstagram.

Genre

Romance: 16%, Mystery: 23%, Science Fiction: 13%, Fantasy: 43%, Non-Fiction: 5%

Personally, I hate tracking genres. Sometimes you have a book that is a mesh of multiple things, and I don’t know where to put it. However, I really wanted to take a look at this because this year was really interesting for me. Historically, I’m a romance and mystery junkie. I still consider myself a romance and mystery junkie. I can fall down that rabbit hole very easily.

In 2018 though, I found myself becoming more of a fantasy and science fiction reader. Honestly, fantasy and science fiction used to scare me. They were all multiple book series with lots of pages and world building. They were downright intimidating. Maybe I have commitment issues. Who knows? The fact is I was scared of them, but in 2018, I decided to buckle down and tackle some of those series. Some were recommended by friends, some I already owned part of, and other’s have just been books I’ve wanted to read. I don’t think I’m very scared of science fiction and fantasy anymore. Although, if anyone knows of any standalone science fiction or fantasy books I should read, hit me up in the comments or on Twitter.

The Year of the Series

Here I’m just going to list the series that I’ve completed (or feel like I completed). I originally was going to add the covers in, but I’ll just link to their respective Goodreads page instead. Some of these books have been reviewed on my blog. For a list of all my reviews sorted by author, you can click here.

  • The Library Jumpers series by Brenda Drake, which I did review on my blog.
  • The Game series by Eve Silver
  • Codex Alrea series by Jim Butcher. Reading that series was quite the investment. I also reviewed this on my blog.
  • Ranger’s Apprentice books 1-4 by John Flanagan. I think I’m only going to read books 1-4. Based upon the synopsis, book 5 starts several years later when Will is no longer an apprentice. I think this is a good stopping point.
  • The School for Good and Evil series by Soman Chainani
  • Embassy Row series by Ally Carter
  • Wolf by Wolf series by Ryan Graudin. Absolutely LOVED this!
  • The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. By far my favorite science fiction series.

Feel free to share your 2018 in books with me! I’d love to see what you read. 🙂 I hope 2019 brings everyone another year of fantastic reads!
